Read a Christmas Story every night before Christmas starting December 1 or maybe even the weekend after Thanksgiving. Some of my favorites include How the Grinch Stole Christmas, God Gave Us Christmas, The Christmas Wish, Christmas in the Manger, The Night Before Christmas, Polar Express and so many more. We have listed a few of our favorites below from Amazon.
Host a cookie exchange with other kids. Have every child bring a dozen or so cookies and swap with others at the party. My mom and I host one each year at her house. Of course its adults but some bring their daughters and its always a huge hit. Kids love cookies and if they are anything like my niece they love to cook so it’s a win win for everyone.
Make your own Christmas Cards. Have each child create a dozen or so cards and deliver them to the local nursing home, church members, teachers or other special friends who may not get out and about. Brighten someones day. We all love a card made by a child. Just something about that sweetness a child’s drawing can bring.
Turn the tv on, grab some hot chocolate and watch Christmas shows. I remember watching Frosty, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, Charlie Browns Christmas, The Grinch, Elf, Santa Clause and so many more every year. Their are so many Christmas shows out there that you could watch a different one daily.
Go to a local Parade. In our home town most Christmas Parades are on the first or second Saturday of the month. We live in a small town and the city goes all out on their parades. The kids love it, they tend to get lots of fun stuff from candy to toys each year. Best of all its always FREE. Sometimes they get to see friends or family in the parade.
Take a night and go see Christmas Lights. Load up the kids, grab the hot chocolate and put everyone in their pajamas. Start a tradition. See how many decked out houses you can find. Some towns have houses that have lights that dance to the music, others have subdivisions all decked out. This was always one of my favorite traditions.
Make some Christmas Ornaments. There are so many neat ways to make ornaments from paper ornaments, to the Cinnamon Apple Sauce Ornaments, Glitter Ornaments, Painted Ornaments, Christmas Trees with Yarn. Popsicle Stick Ornaments, Finger Print Ornaments, Salt Dough Ornaments, and the list could go on and on. Kids love to craft, and mom loves adding Ornaments to the tree so its a win win for all.
Go see Santa. Now a days you can find Santa just about everywhere. A lot of times you can find him at the local small business open house, places such as the mall, Bass Pro Shop, School events, Church Events and other places around town.
Make Hot Chocolate. In fact turn it into a bar. Grab the Hot Chocolate, Marshmallows, Graham Crackers, and add a twist to the bar….throw in some M&M’s – Peppermint Candies, Different flavors of hot chocolate, any kind of Chocolate Candy you can think of, Baking chocolate chips, White Chocolate chips, peanut butter chips etc etc… We use to have Hot Chocolate bars at work and the crew always loved it. Our bar was such a hit every year it was requested earlier and earlier multiple times a year.
Go Ice Skating...do you have a ice rink nearby? In our town we have one about 10 miles from us and the kids love it. They love to get out there and skate for hours. Make this a family tradition. Its a great way to keep them entertained during the Christmas Break.
